A-G RECIPE SUBSTITUTIONS

Allspice (1 tbsp.)

Arrowroot Starch (1-1/2 tsp.)

Baking Powder (1 tsp.)

 

1/2 tsp cinnamon + 1/2 tsp cloves

1 tbsp. flour or 1-1/2 tsp. Cornstarch

1/3 tsp. Baking Soda & 1/2 tsp. Cream of Tartar. Or 1/4 tsp. Baking Soda + 1/2 Cup Buttermilk

 

Beef or Chicken Broth (1 Cup)

Bouillon cube in 1 cup boiling water, Or 1 envelope powdered Broth in 1 cup water, Or 1 tsp. powdered Broth in 1 cup water.

Butter (1 Cup)

7/8 to 1 cup vegetable shortening (if salted butter is required, add about 1/2 tsp. salt.

Catsup (1 Cup)

1 Cup Tomato Sauce, 1/2 cup Sugar plus 2 tbsp. sugar or maple syrup

Chili Sauce (I Cup)

1 Cup Tomato Sauce, 1/4 cup Brown Sugar, 2 tbsp. Vinegar, 1/4 tsp. Cinnamon, dash of Ground Cloves and Allspice

Chocolate Semisweet (1-2/3 Ounce)

1 ounce Unsweetened Chocolate plus 3 tsp. Sugar

Chocolate Semisweet Chips (6 Ounce Package)

Chocolate Unsweetened (1 ounce or Square)

Cocoa (1/4 cup)

2 squares Unsweetened Chocolate, 2 tbsp. vegetable shortening, 1/2 cup sugar

3 tbsp. Good Cocoa + 1 tbsp. Vegetable shortening 

1 ounce (square) Chocolate (decrease fat by 1/2 tbsp.)

 

Corn Syrup (1 Cup)

I cup Sugar + 1/4 Liquid used in recipe)

Cornstarch (1 tbsp.)

2 tbsp. flour or 2 tbsp. ground Tapioca

Cream, Whipped (2 Cups)

 13 ounces Evaporated Milk chilled for at least 12 hours. Add 1 tsp. lemon juice then whip.

Egg Yolks (2)

1 Whole Egg 

Flour (1 Cup) 

1 Cup + 2 tbsp. Cake Flour, Or 1-1/2 Cup Bread Crumbs, Or 1 Cup Rolled Oats, Or 1/3 Cup Cornmeal & 2/3 cup all purpose flour 

Flour (Cake) 

2 tablespoons corn starch + All purpose flour (just under a cup). Place cornstarch in a measuring cup and add all purpose flour just until it reaches a cup. Mix and sift before using. 

Flour, Self-Rising (1 Cup)

1 Cup minus 2 tsp. All Purpose Flour & 1-1/2 tsp. Baking Powder & 1/2 tsp. Salt. 

Gelatin, Flavored (3 Ounces)

1 tbsp. Plain Gelatin + 2 Cups Fruit Juice
